Beginning ESL

About This Course

Beginning ESL is a competency-based course designed for students who cannot function unassisted in a situation requiring spoken English. They may read or write in their primary language and/or successfully completed the Beginning Literacy Level, but they have no skills in reading and writing English except for recognizing letters and numbers and writing their names and addresses. This course focuses on topics that are relevant to the students’ lives. It integrates language forms and functions with topical objectives that are selected to meet student goals and interests. Non-verbal behavior and cross-cultural communication are taught implicitly through teacher modeling and through interactive activities that encourage community building.
